Tradition

Montappone is a small town in the Marche Region and stands on a hill in the province of Fermo, less than an hour’s drive from both the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mountains. From the roots of the peasant culture originates the tradition of weaving straw and therefore the production of hats. Historical and cultural memory of this ancient art of straw is the Hat Museum, which houses materials and artefacts of the time, and proudly preserves even the last hat worn by director Federico Fellini.

Noteworthy artistic attractions are not lacking in Montappone. In the Parish Church of S. Maria and S. Giorgio the painting “Madonna with Child and Saints” by Pomarancio (1552-1626) and a Reliquary Cross from the 15th century are preserved. In the historical center it is possible to admire the Oratory of the Sacrament, with frescoes attributed to Vincenzo Pagani, and the great Church of S. Maria in Castello from the 18th century. In short, those who arrive in Montappone intrigued by the production of hats and caps, then discover that the success of the Marche, especially among foreign tourists, is justified. There is good food, courtesy of the people, and everything that is comfortable and rejuvenating for the spirit.
